Mucking about with Structure Synth and Sunflow

Warning: geeky headfuck ahead

Capture

Things I did wrong and made things fail:

  • Listened to the wrong pin on the MCU. No data = no decoding
  • Shifted all the bits left by 2, all values were fucked
  • Timer was too slow, decimal point in the wrong place
  • NEC suck. Go Phillips!

Things that went right:

  • The ear-led can now be controlled by infrared!!

Things wot I’m making

Last month I won a load of stuff from Sparkfun during their “free day” promotion, amongst the stuff that I got was a small OLED screen module. TBH at the time I had no idea what to do with it, now I have..

Flashing ear tunnels

February 3rd, 2010

I’ve been stretching my earlobes over the last few months and this week I finally hit my target of 5mm.. anyone one thats done this (and has an odd sense of humour..) has been through the point where you think “what can i stick through the hole thats strange and wonderful?”

Well I was ordering some parts for another project and started browsing LED’s, sure enough I spot the “5mm ultrabright” section and start thinking “hey that’d work…”. Well I had a 5mm LED already but it was too large, however the 3mm ones fit in the metal tunnels I have perfectly…

So the engineer-lobe of my brain started working overdrive, How can I power it? How can I hide the power source? Can I make it do anything cooler than just stay on all the time?

Half an hour later I’d ordered a load of ATTiny13 controllers, some Lithium batteries and a load of 3mm LED’s. This morning they arrived so I got to work. First step : making the jump from Arduino to proper AVR coding

Got the vinyl cutter out today and knocked this up, submitted it to Threadless.com. If it gets printed I win $2500, which would stave off the need to work for a while..

Let the hacks commence

My arms fixed btw, just needs physio to move it. Its “healed” according to all the criteria the NHS use, which means “the bone is fixed but might be at a funky angle”. I find out in 2 months if it needs surgery..

Meanwhile I can solder and dremel happily, so given that I’ve got time left while I recover I thought I’d complete some of the projects that are sitting in various stages of completion. First up was the old tetris clock, which I’ve given up on now as I’m sure theres a deep wiring problem somewhere on the LED board which is causing annoying ghosting problems. Its getting recycled for parts now..

Quick update

December 21st, 2009

that wont be so quick because I have to type with my left hand..

I’m stuck in Pokhara until the doctor gives me the ok to travel, which should be tomorrow…. except that theres a general strike until wednesday so I cant get to the hospital! Joy! If he gives me the all-clear then I’m considering returning to the UK to wait out the healing process. I’ve got things to do at home so I wont be quite so bored!

On the other hand its warm here and dead cheap to live so I may stay and travel around a bit if I feel ok, I’m not decided yet though, I still really want to see india..

Heres some pics of the mess I’m in:
